Marc kissed Valerie, then sat back, fingering the wheel of the Volkswagen. They had driven home from the party in Palos Verdes with long lapses of silence. Now Marc was again quiet, his thoughts far away from her.
She watched him for a minute. âWhat?â she asked softly, noting the sudden creasing of his eyebrows.
âAlex is going to have us work tomorrow again.â
âI know.â She turned to look out the window. âI heard him telling Jackie.â
âLook, Iâm sorry, Valerie. This is the fourth Saturday in a row, but Derek is back from Jakarta and needs to report. And this delegation of Saudis coming to Washington on the fourteenth is critical. Iâve never seen Alex so nervous.â
âI know.â She turned back. âMomâs got an all-day meeting downtown tomorrow, but I can take Brett to soccer. And then Iâll go with them to the party at the church.â
âI should be home by four. Couldnât we go after that?â
She shook her head. âMy Aunt Edna is coming over in the evening. And the party only goes until dark.â
Marcâs face fell. âThatâs right.â He took a quick breath. âValerie, once we get this Saudi deal put together, things should lighten up.â
She reached out and took his hand. âYou donât have to justify anything to me. Itâs the boys that will be disappointed.â
âI see,â he said soberly. âJust the boys?â
She sighed. âYou know I will too. I was looking forward to being with you.â
âLook, letâs plan on something for Monday night. We have to be to Edwards Air Force Base by nine oâclock for the demonstration of the prototype, but it shouldnât take more than an hour or two. I think I can be home by three or four. Letâs take the boys out to McDonaldâs, then go to a movie.â
âThat sounds fun. And that will help ease tomorrow.â
He moved back over to her, and she laid her head on his shoulder. For several moments they were both quiet, then she looked up at him. He was looking out the window, seeing nothing.
âTell me what youâre thinking,â she said softly.
He glanced at her quickly, then turned back. âI was thinking about Alex Barclay.â
âWhat about him?â
âRemember what you said about him, that he always seems to want people to know how much money he spends on things?â
âYes.â
âI used to think that was what made him tick. The money.â
âAnd now?â
âItâs not the money. Thatâs just a nice side benefit. Itâs the deal.â
âWhat do you mean, itâs the deal?â
âTo Alex, the deal is everything. Thereâs something about putting it together, through all the challenges, with all the risks. Itâs what drives him.â
âI think I know what you mean.â
He kissed her, then pulled her close, burying his face in her hair. âAnd do you know what is scary?â
âWhat?â
âIâm starting to know exactly how he feels.â
